What is FOR COP’S SAKE!
What is COP26
In November 2021, the world’s leaders met in Glasgow for the most important climate conference to date, COP26. For 12 short days, the world’s leaders gathered to decide the planet’s fate and our future and Glasgow became the centre for climate debate and the action required to keep global temperatures below 1.5°C. Generations to come will see COP26 as either the turning or tipping point. Let’s hope we can tip the scales in favour of the planet and its people.
What is For Cop's Sake?
For the duration of the summit, from the 1st - 12th November, Route One partnered with re:ply skateboards to host “For Cop’s Sake!”, a Skateboard Art Show in the Route One Glasgow store.
The store, at 254 Sauchiehall Street, was transformed from a retailer of skateboards, clothing, and footwear, into a Skateboard Art Showroom, displaying artwork donated by brilliant skate and street artists from around the world. The works have been created on old recycled skateboards, which were collected through Route One's Deckcycle scheme and re-vitalised by re:ply skateboards, promoting circularity. Each artist had free licence to express their personal response to the Climate Crisis, and the collection as a whole sends a message from the skate community to the world leaders who gathered at COP, to take the bold steps required now for all our sakes!
At Route One and re:ply skateboards, we wanted to give our community a platform to express their feelings about the climate crisis, protest government inaction, and raise awareness and funds to battle environmental inequality through supporting the Environmental Justice Foundation.
The Auction
The show culminated in an live auction in store and online, on Friday 12th November, hosted by Forum Auctions, where a grand total of £22,000 was made! Forum Auctions kindly waived their commission so 100% of the proceeds from the Auction have been donated to the Environmental Justice Foundation (Charity No. 1088128), an NGO working to address climate injustice by exposing environmental human rights abuses and defending the vulnerable communities that bear the brunt of the climate crisis.
We were absolutely thrilled with the results of the show, which produced brilliant environmental artwork, raised awareness about climate change and inequality within the skateboarding community, and donated £22,000 to the Environmental Justice Foundation to continue their fantastic work.
Messages to the Leaders at COP
In addition to the art show and auction, we invited the public into our Route One stores to write their messages to the leaders at COP. These paper decks were displayed alongside the artists decks in the Glasgow Art Showroom. We were super excited to have such a high level of engagement from the public and it was great to see the skating community come together to fight for climate action.
